Why does sweat rate matter?

If the fluid lost as sweat during exercise isn't replaced, performance drops, thermoregulation is impaired and cramp risk rises. Everyone's sweat rate is different — some people sweat 0.5 litres an hour, others more than 2 litres. That's why "the same amount of water for everyone" advice doesn't work. By weighing yourself before and after a workout you can measure how much fluid you lose on an individual basis and build the right drinking plan for races and training. A loss of more than 2% of body mass is associated with a marked drop in endurance and focus.

How is sweat rate calculated?

Fluid lost as sweat is found by adding the fluid you drank during the workout to your weight difference, then dividing by the hours (1 kg loss ≈ 1 litre of fluid):

Sweat loss (L) = (Pre − Post weight) + Fluid drunk
Hourly rate (L/hour) = Sweat loss ÷ (Duration ÷ 60)

Loss % = (Pre − Post) ÷ Pre × 100

Example: 75 kg → 74 kg, 60 minutes, 0.5 L of water drunk:
Sweat loss = (75 − 74) + 0.5 = 1.5 L → hourly rate 1.5 L/hour
Loss of 1.3% (below the 2% threshold for 75 kg); rehydration target ≈ 1.5 L (about 1.5× the loss).

Method: Measuring fluid loss via sweat is the standard approach in athlete hydration assessment (e.g. ACSM/NATA guidelines). A 1 kg loss of body mass ≈ 1 L of fluid; 125–150% of the loss is recommended as the rehydration target.

Tips for fluid planning

  • Don't wait until you're thirsty: Thirst is a late sign of mild dehydration; drink regularly and to a plan.
  • Sweat rises in hot/humid conditions: The same exercise loses very different amounts of fluid in a different climate; re-measure to suit the conditions.
  • Electrolytes in long/intense exercise: Sessions over 1 hour or that make you sweat heavily need not just water but sodium too.
  • Spread rehydration over time: Take in 1.25–1.5× the loss spread over a few hours; too much water at once carries a risk of hyponatraemia.
  • Check your urine colour: Pale straw yellow indicates good hydration (see the urine colour tool on this site).
Note: This tool is an estimate; sweat rate varies by day and by conditions. Excessive water intake (hyponatraemia) is as risky as dehydration. For a personal fluid-electrolyte plan, consult a sports dietitian.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no single "good" figure; it varies from 0.5 to 2.5 litres an hour depending on the individual and conditions. What matters isn't the absolute number but knowing your own loss and being able to replace it.

The aim is to keep body-mass loss below 2%. If you know your sweat rate, you drink accordingly; e.g. if you sweat 1.5 L an hour, you target around that at regular intervals in a long session. Don't overdo it.

About 1.25–1.5 litres of fluid is recommended for every kilo lost; because of ongoing losses via urine, take in a little more than the full loss, spread over a few hours.

For short to moderate sessions water is usually enough. But for exercise over 1 hour, heavy-sweating sessions or hot conditions, sodium (electrolytes) is needed too; water alone, if overdone, can dilute your blood sodium to dangerous levels.

Sweat rate varies with exercise intensity, duration, air temperature, humidity, clothing, acclimatisation and individual differences. That's why re-measuring under different conditions is the most accurate approach.

No. The rapid weight loss during a workout is almost entirely fluid, not fat. This water comes back with rehydration; don't confuse it with lasting fat loss.
