Why do calories burned matter?

The calories you burn are the energy your body spends on movement. Weight management rests largely on energy balance: burn more than you take in and you'll lose weight over time; burn less and you'll gain. Physical activity directly raises the "spending" side of that balance. Knowing how many calories you burn helps you plan your exercise around your goal, judge your daily movement without overestimating it, and set up an energy deficit or surplus that fits your nutrition. Beyond the burn itself, regular movement also supports heart health, blood-sugar control and your mood.

How are calories burned calculated?

This tool uses the science-based MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method. A MET tells you how many times more energy an activity burns compared with being at rest: 1 MET is rest, while an 8 MET activity burns eight times as much energy as rest. Calories burned are worked out from the activity's MET value, your body weight and the duration:

kcal = MET × weight (kg) × (minutes / 60)

Walking ........ 3.5 MET
Cycling ....... 7.5 MET
Running ........... 9.8 MET
HIIT ........... 8.0 MET
Jump rope ...... 11.0 MET

Example: a 75 kg person walking briskly for 45 minutes (MET 5.0):
kcal = 5.0 × 75 × (45 / 60) = ≈ 169 kcal. The same person running for 45 minutes (MET 9.8) burns roughly 331 kcal.

Method: MET values are taken from Ainsworth BE et al., Compendium of Physical Activities (2011 update). The values are approximate; actual burn varies with fitness, intensity and terrain.

Tips to burn more calories

To burn more calories in the same time and keep movement sustainable:

  • Raise the intensity: picking up the pace or adding incline/intervals increases the MET value.
  • Use the big muscle groups: activities that work the legs and the whole body burn more energy.
  • Add more daily movement: stairs, walking to get around and simply being on your feet (NEAT) add up to a big difference.
  • Add resistance training: more muscle mass raises your resting metabolism.
Important The MET method is based on average values and isn't as precise as measuring your own heart rate. Treat the number as a helpful reference point, not an exact target.

Yes. Walking is an effective activity with a MET value (how many times more energy an activity burns than rest) of roughly 3–5, and done regularly it adds up to a serious calorie total. For example, a 70 kg person burns about 200–250 kcal on a brisk 45-minute walk; do that five days a week and the small-looking numbers turn into a meaningful monthly difference. Walking has the added advantage of not stressing the joints the way running can, and almost anyone can keep it up. Of course, nutrition is still the main driver of weight loss — walking is a powerful way to support it.

MET values are taken from a scientific source that measures and lists the energy cost of thousands of activities — the <b>Compendium of Physical Activities</b> (Ainsworth et al.); most sports and health apps around the world use this standard. But these are <b>average</b> values: your real burn varies from person to person depending on your weight, muscle mass, fitness and how hard you do the activity. So use the result as a good estimate and comparison tool rather than an exact number — a device that measures your heart rate will give a more personal result.
