Why do calories burned matter?
The calories you burn are the energy your body spends on movement. How are calories burned calculated?
This tool uses the science-based MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method. A MET tells you how many times more energy an activity burns compared with being at rest: 1 MET is rest, while an 8 MET activity burns eight times as much energy as rest. Calories burned are worked out from the activity's MET value, your body weight and the duration:

Example: a 75 kg person walking briskly for 45 minutes (MET 5.0):
kcal = 5.0 × 75 × (45 / 60) = ≈ 169 kcal. The same person running for 45 minutes (MET 9.8) burns roughly 331 kcal.

Tips to burn more calories
To burn more calories in the same time and keep movement sustainable:
- Raise the intensity: picking up the pace or adding incline/intervals increases the MET value.
- Use the big muscle groups: activities that work the legs and the whole body burn more energy.
- Add more daily movement: stairs, walking to get around and simply being on your feet (NEAT) add up to a big difference.
- Add resistance training: more muscle mass raises your resting metabolism.
