What is FINDRISC?
FINDRISC (Finnish Diabetes Risk Score) is a validated screening tool that estimates the chance of developing type 2 diabetes within 10 years without a blood test. It was developed in 2003 by Lindström and Tuomilehto. Using only age, height-weight, waist circumference and a few lifestyle questions, it produces a risk score. It is widely used in public health screening worldwide because it is fast, inexpensive and non-invasive — it requires no needle or laboratory.
How is the score calculated?
Each of the eight questions has its own point range; the total runs from 0 to 26. The higher the score, the higher the risk:
BMI .................. 0–3
Waist circumference ........ 0–4
Activity (yes/no) .. 0 / 2
Vegetables-fruit (daily) . 0 / 1
Blood pressure medication ....... 0 / 2
Blood sugar history .... 0 / 5
Family history ......... 0 / 3 / 5
Example: Someone aged 58 (3), with a BMI of 31 (3), a large waist circumference (4), who gets 30 minutes of activity a day (0), eats vegetables daily (0), takes no blood pressure medication (0), has no blood sugar history (0), and has a parent with diabetes (5): a total of 15 points → "High risk", 10-year chance ~33%.

Ways to lower your diabetes risk
- Shrink your waist: Abdominal fat is one of the strongest markers of insulin resistance; even a 5–7% weight loss noticeably lowers the risk.
- 150 minutes of activity a week: Even brisk walking increases muscle glucose uptake.
- Increase fiber and vegetables: Whole grains, legumes and vegetables reduce blood sugar swings.
- Cut out sugary drinks: Liquid sugar is one of the fastest drivers of weight gain and risk.
- Keep blood pressure in check: High blood pressure and diabetes often occur together; manage the two together.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The test is entirely non-invasive: it works with your age, height, weight, waist circumference and a few yes/no questions. The question "Have you ever had high blood sugar?" asks about a past measurement — it does not require you to get a test now.
No. FINDRISC estimates future risk; it does not diagnose an existing disease. A high score means you should see a physician and clarify your situation with a fasting blood sugar or HbA1c test.
Abdominal (visceral) fat is directly linked to insulin resistance and is one of the strongest predictors of type 2 diabetes. That is why waist circumference is scored separately in addition to BMI; the threshold values differ for men and women.
The modifiable items are waist circumference, BMI, physical activity and diet. Losing weight, increasing daily activity and eating a vegetable- and fiber-rich diet lower the score and reduce your actual risk. Age and family history don't change, but they can be offset by improving the others.
FINDRISC is designed for adults and is generally used in the 25–74 age range. It is not suitable for children, pregnant women or people already diagnosed with diabetes.
No. FINDRISC is meant to estimate future risk in people who do not have diabetes. If you have been diagnosed, you should work with your physician for follow-up and treatment; this tool provides no useful information for you.
