What is ideal weight?
Ideal weight is the weight range considered healthiest for your height and overall build. There is no single 'right' number; ideal weight should be thought of as a range, because muscle mass, bone structure and fat distribution differ from person to person. This tool shows the average of the classic medical formulas used for decades together with the kilograms that correspond to a healthy BMI range.
How is ideal weight calculated?
This tool gives the healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9 × height²) as its main, evidence-based result. Alongside it, it shows the average of four historically known classic formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) for reference. These classic equations add a fixed amount of weight for every inch of height above 5 ft (152 cm); however, they were originally derived not for nutrition but for hospital drug dosing. So take the range, not a single number, as your target:
Devine (female): 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in − 60)
The Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas work on similar logic; the tool shows the average of all four.
Example: for a man 175 cm (≈68.9 in) tall, the Devine formula:
50 + 2.3 × (68.9 − 60) = 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 ≈ 70 kg. The average of the four formulas together with the BMI range gives a more realistic target.
Method: The main result is the weight range derived from the WHO healthy BMI limits (18.5–24.9). The reference average comes from the Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) formulas; because these equations were originally developed for clinical drug dosing and don't distinguish muscle from fat, the current approach doesn't use them alone as an "ideal weight".
Which value should I go by?
The formulas are close but don't give the same value, which is exactly why it's healthiest to think in terms of a range. Practical advice:
- The healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9 × height²) is the most inclusive reference.
- The formula average gives a more specific target point within that range.
- If you have high muscle mass, your ideal weight may sit above these figures — body fat percentage is more informative.
Frequently asked questions
Each formula (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) was developed in a different year, on a different population, and the weight added per inch differs. So a few kilos of difference is normal; averaging them gives a more balanced estimate.
Both are estimates. The BMI range gives a broad, inclusive healthy band for your height; the ideal weight formulas suggest a single target point within that band. For the truest picture, use both together, ideally alongside your body fat percentage.
Men on average have more muscle mass and a different body composition, so the formulas' starting figure (the base weight) is lower for women. The tool applies the right coefficients for the sex you select.

Not necessarily. 'Ideal weight' isn't a single exact number but a range, and that range can't see muscle mass, bone structure or fat distribution. Someone slightly above the healthy BMI range with a normal waist, who is active and has good health markers (blood pressure, blood sugar), can be healthier than someone right in the middle of the range but sedentary. So rather than fixating on a single weight, it's better to judge weight together with waist circumference and body fat percentage.
Only to a limited extent. The classic ideal weight formulas and BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so a muscular person who trains with weights regularly can look 'overweight' in these calculations even though their body fat is low and healthy.
