Why does waist-to-height ratio matter?
Body mass index (BMI) doesn't show where your fat sits. Yet visceral fat in the belly (the hidden fat that wraps around your internal organs, far riskier than the fat just under your skin) is much more strongly linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure than fat on the hips and legs. The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) captures this central fat simply, by judging your waist against your height — and it offers a fairer comparison across different heights than BMI does.
How is waist-to-height ratio calculated?
It's a single step: divide your waist by your height. Both must be in the same unit (cm). The lower the resulting ratio, the less central fat you carry. The public-health message is easy to remember: keep your waist to less than half your height.
< 0.40 ......... very low
0.40 – 0.49 .... healthy
0.50 – 0.59 .... increased risk
≥ 0.60 ........ high risk
Healthy waist ceiling = height × 0.5
Example: for a height of 175 cm and a waist of 84 cm, the ratio = 84 / 175 = 0.48 → healthy band. Healthy waist ceiling = 175 × 0.5 = 88 cm; the waist is below that, so it's on target.

How do you shrink your waist?
Central fat is one of the first areas to shrink when you lose weight. Effective steps:
- Calorie balance: a moderate deficit, cutting back on processed sugar and refined carbs.
- Protein and fiber: boost fullness and naturally lower your total intake.
- Movement: regular walking + 2–3 resistance sessions a week reduce visceral fat.
- Sleep and stress: too little sleep and chronic stress add belly fat.
Frequently asked questions
They measure different things. BMI reflects overall mass, while the waist-to-height ratio shows how fat is distributed (especially the risky belly fat). Many studies have found the waist-to-height ratio to be at least as good as BMI — often better — at predicting cardiovascular risk. The healthiest approach is to look at both together.
The general advice is to measure at the level of your belly button, close to bare skin, with the tape parallel to the floor and not tight. Measure after a normal exhale; don't suck your stomach in. Measuring from the same point matters for tracking.
It's half your height (height × 0.5). This value is the upper waist limit that keeps your ratio below 0.5. For example, at 170 cm the ceiling is 85 cm; keeping your waist below that is the target for central fat.
Don't panic — this is a screening result, not a diagnosis. Even trimming your waist by a few centimeters can meaningfully lower your risk. Start with small, sustainable changes to your diet, movement, and sleep; if there's clear risk, consult a doctor or dietitian.
An accurate measurement directly affects the result. Stand up straight and don't suck your stomach in (that hides the true value). Wrap the tape horizontally around the narrowest point between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hip bone — usually at the level of your belly button. After a normal exhale, read it with the tape against your skin but neither pressed in nor left loose. Measuring in the morning, on an empty stomach, and always the same way makes day-to-day comparisons reliable.
For central (belly) fat and its associated heart, vascular, and diabetes risk, most research considers the waist-to-height ratio a stronger predictor than BMI — because BMI can't see where the fat is. It's also fairer across different heights, and the rule 'keep your waist to less than half your height' makes it easy to remember. Still, the two aren't rivals but complements: BMI shows your overall weight status, while the waist-to-height ratio shows whether fat is gathering in the risky area — it's best to look at both together.
